This may represent our fears of mortality and our feelings of helplessness to do what, deep down, we all know, is our true responsibility. When the leader of a pod of whales leads the pod onto the beach, the others generally follow. It can be difficult to break with the behavior we have been taught by our families and continue to see in our peers and our leaders. This ravished form is not intended to glorify violence or destruction of any kind, but should serve as a stark glimpse into the oncoming turbulence in our world if we continue to shirk our responsibility as stewards of this planet and one another. The belly of the whale is a dark womb like place that can be associated with the blackness of the un-manifested realm. To enter it is a kind of death. To escape from the belly of the whale is likewise a Re-birth. This process can be seen as a transcendental journey from our lower nature ruled by selfishness and desire, to our higher nature guided by kindness and respect. Into the belly of the beast we must seek truth and diminish self. Here we must die not a physical death but die to our past and to the future. We die before we die, and realize there is no death. We must wake up to the present moment as the eternal connecting principle that joins all life and all things. Passion was exhibited at the Tampa Museum of Art. An elongated voluminous form of dark brown, chocolate, and light flesh tones, hangs prostrate overhead in the 30’ corridor. One end is bifurcated and descending from above as two fleshy appendages of a great sea lion reaching down as if an offering of peace to all who may pass between them. The other end, a suggestion of some alien creature’s head shrouded in translucent polymer film that is tied together with red strips of latex. The distended belly of the beast at a height of just 7 feet is cut open in a vesica piscis, allowing viewers to peer into the open cavity and glimpse the brilliant glow of the enshrouded tumescent crown and the craftwork of the interior structure. The edges of the wound delineated by more red latex detail making reference to the Mandorla and implications of crucifixion. Passion is a reflection of the hopes and fears of humanity. This sculpture was comprised of over 15,000 balloons. To make the sculpture stronger, each balloon was inserted into a second balloon before inflating. A group show of artists making work using objects that can be classified as kids toys. http://www.taubmanmuseum.org/calendar/9554/play   Quadropus Didactic It is common for a toddler to begin to associate their name with who they are, they often will refer to themselves in the third person. “Jonny is hungry.” Or “That’s Jonny’s toy.” Shortly after this they will learn the words “I” and “me” or “my.” As we mature many people continue to make the mistake of identifying who they are by the things they own, or the clothes they wear and even more common, the functions they serve. Most people have a mental image of who they are, and invariably will assign labels or “identities” to others whom they meet. For example when you go to the supermarket, you my mistake the store clerk for little more than the function they are serving as the clerk and the clerk has likely done the same to you. You are now seen as little more than a customer. In this instance you have a projected image of who you think you are, “John Smith, senior accountant, married, two kids, owner of a BMW etc,” and the store clerk also has a projected image of themselves. Add these two mental images to the projected identities of store clerk and customer and you may see that in any given encounter with another person, there are four false identities being exchanged. The truth to be discovered is that each of us are ultimately not the things we own, or the car we drive, but are a physical manifestation of consciousness. We are conscious experience. And if we can just let go of those identities for a moment and have a meaningful exchange with the other, the opportunity for true human connection returns. This is the meaning of Jesus’s words “deny thyself” and “heaven is right here in the midst of you.”   Quadropus may be seen to have four curving appendages descending from a large dome-like upper structure. Each of the four appendages provide an opening for viewers to look inside. And each one is at a different height to accommodate any age range or variance of tallness of viewers. But what viewers will discover is that looking into the openings at the ends of the tubes will not give a complete view of the form or its inner structure. Instead, guests will have to get seemingly lower, perhaps even crawl on their hands and knees to go underneath the greater dome shape and from this lower vantage point gain a much greater perspective. From below, it will be possible to recognize the intricate and orderly construction patterns of the protective dome and experience the true nature of the form. And it may even occur that you will find yourself sharing that space with another or maybe even a handful of others. Born innocent, delicate, and free from the burdensome cares of the world, children are a bottomless resource of joy and unconditional love. As adults our minds are teeming with prejudice, greed and unrepentant ego. Like the chrysalis, which shrouds a transforming larva, Crystal Cortex is a symbol of metamorphosis. Its long translucent cloak is a reminder of our subtle nature and the rich fiery glow in the voluminous top, a reflection of our brilliant intelligence entombed in painful knowledge. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. This sculpture was constructed in four parts in a studio in Brooklyn over the course of a week. On installation day it was trucked over and each piece was snaked through the front door, unwrapped and attached to the next by a team of more than 30 volunteers and assistants. The entire installation was complete in under 40 minutes. The piece hung for one night for the Works & Process Gala event on April 2nd 2014.
